CCM California's Central Coast Magazine

Forget expensive safari trips to Africa. The Central Coast is home to a menagerie of beautiful, rare, and wild beasts, from butterflies to zebras. If you’re patient, you will witness the wonder of a gentle heron alighting from the bay, an otter popping its head out to spy on your kayak crew, or even a massive, ancient whale breaching off the coast of a private cove. So grab your binoculars and explore—and remember: Leave no trace.

Elephant SealsAnn from Cambria voted for “Small, cozy, intimate San Simeon Bay with sea otters and seals and a setting that will take your mind to a different latitude and space” in this category, and we can’t agree more. The exceptional setting is also home to the Central Coast’s most glorified pinnipeds: the breeding, beaching, and bellowing elephant seals that arrive at Piedras Blancas in droves each year. If you’ve never gone to see it for yourself, try the late winter months through April to catch sight of the black-coated babies. In the summer, you may catch the adult males molting; and toward December, watch the antics as they claim their territory and mates. www.elephantseal.org

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, a federally protected marine area from Marin to Cambria, is home to multitudes of marine life. If you take a kayak out on the kelp beds near Monterey Harbor, you’re sure to see the whiskered wildlife of the bay pop their curious heads out of the water. Affable sea otters backstroke through the bay, buoying to the seaweed and foraging in the rich waters, while over 1,000 sea lions and of course the year-round resident harbor seals can be seen near the harbor. In late spring, harbor seal pups learn the ropes in Carmel coves like Fanshell Beach. montereybay.noaa.gov

The Santa Barbara Channel is our favorite place to witness dolphins and humpback, blue, and grey whales. Island Packers’ seasoned skippers will introduce you to the channel and you are sure to be blown away by the number of breaches, blowholes, and bottlenoses you’ll spot in the proper season. Once out at the Channel Islands, jump in a kayak to get an up-close and personal look at the sea lions that breed in their many coves and caves during the summer, while also getting a glimpse of the clear blue waters harboring Garibaldi and other brilliant fish.
