Cayucos Candy
Counter, CAYUCOS
Nothing epitomizes the perfect summer day like eating an ice cream cone while strolling beachside. Cayucos Candy Counter is a charming, old fashioned confectionary just steps from the ocean, where they serve up several brands of locally produced ice cream and gelato. As the name suggests, if you need a non-meltable treat to take home with you, head to the candy counter for a giant lollipop or bag of taffy.

Palermo VENTURA
Named after
a historic
city in Southern
Italy, Palermo
is gelateria
perfection.
Creamy concoctions
such as "Bavarian
Mint" embody
what we look
for in a sweet
treat. While
gelato is typically
known for its
high calorie
content (that's
what makes
it so good),
Palermo offers
guilt-free
alternatives
like sugar-free
dark chocolate
and a 97 percent
fat-free banana
and walnut.
We were also
tempted by
the display
case full of
handcrafted
chocolates
and pastries,
and the Italian-style
roasted coffee
and espressos.
Overall, CCM
dubs Palermo
as "delizioso!"

Daddy O's,
ARROYO GRANDE
Locally owned
and family
operated, Daddy
O's uses 16
percent cream
base to ensure
rich perfection
(most shops
use 12 or 14),
so they coined
the word "supremium" to
describe their
super premium
product. Working
with all your
favorite mix-ins
on a cold stone,
Daddy O's can
custom create
the flavor
of your dreams.
They offer
kid pleasers
like "Bubblegum" and "Cake
Batter" as
well as more
adult options
such as "Black
Cherry Wine" and "Bailey's
Irish Cream," and
even lactose
free choices
like "Soy Cherry
Chocolate Chip." Their
surf décor
rides the wave
into their
ice cream combos,
so hang 10
with the "Gnarly
Monkey" or
the "Pipeline
Paradise".

Childs
Play
Family
Parks

Come
on ... have
a little
fun! Whether
you're
a parent or simply want to relive the carefree
days of years past, these are our picks
for the best parks and play areas to bring
your kids, or bring out the kid in you.
Dennis the
Menace Park,
MONTEREY
While living in Carmel Woods, Dennis the
Menace creator Hank Ketcham spearheaded the
construction of this playground, which opened
to the public in 1956. Half a century later,
this park still holds the same magic for
kids (and adults). With a real steam engine
to climb on, a suspension bridge, giant curvy
slides, a hedge maze, and brightly colored
play structures, you'll feel like you've
walked into a cartoon.
Pearl St.,
Monterey
Atascadero
Lake Park,
ATASCADERO
This lakeside park provides a full day
of fun for the family with a large playground
that offers a variety of play structures,
a sand volleyball court, and horseshoe
pits. Plus, there are seasonal wading pools,
boat and kayak rentals, and a walking trail
around the lake. But our favorite feature
is the Charles Paddock Zoo--a fully accredited
zoo exhibiting over 100 animals on five
park-like acres. 9305 Pismo Ave., Atascadero
Barney Schwartz Park PASO ROBLES Sprawling
over 40 acres of open rolling hills, Barney
Schwartz Park features a plaza, two playgrounds
with innovative equipment, a waterfall,
multiple ball fields, and several picnic
and barbecue areas, all accessible by way
of the wide concrete walking paths. Oh,
and did we mention the one-million gallon
lake? Feel free to bring a fishing pole
or a remote control boat, since both are
allowed. And don't forget the sunscreen
and water bottles-- the spacious but scarcely-shaded
park gets a little heated in the hot Paso
Robles summers.
2970 Union
Rd., Paso Robles
Del Mar Park,
MORRO BAY
The recently renovated play area features
a 28-foot-tall climbing structure with
a plummeting slide that the bigger kids
can't get enough of. There's also a zipline,
a rope climbing structure, a cool new seesaw,
swings, and other integrated features designed
for tots. Sheltered on the hillside above
Morro Bay, this nine-acre park sees warmer
weather than the coastal parks. Lush trees
and a natural creek surround the open,
sunny space, which also features a basketball
court, amphitheater, roller hockey rink,
horseshoe pits, and barbecue and picnic
areas along with a large grassy meadow.
3090 Ironwood
Ave., Morro
Bay
Waller Park,
SANTA MARIA
We were both amazed and slightly daunted
when we initially visited this beautiful
153-acre park in Santa Maria. If it's your
first visit, take a drive around and examine
all the options: grassy lawns, shady picnic
areas, basketball and volleyball courts,
a Frisbee disc golf course, and even pony
rides in a kid-sized western corral on
the weekends. And if your pooch is looking
for some quality off -leash socializing
time, treat them to the three glorious
acres of Woof!-Pac Park. But if it's the
children's play area you are looking for,
head toward the park's main entrance adjacent
the beautiful fountains splashing in the
middle of the duck ponds.
3107 Orcutt
Rd., Santa
Maria
We
also like:
Rotary Centennial
Park in Santa
Maria.
This
is a brand
new neighborhood
park next to
the Robin Ventura
Field that
features a
10-station
exercise trail
system, basketball
court, a tot
lot, and several
benches and
picnic areas.
The parents
on our staff
all attest
that their
munchkins can't
get enough
of the brightly
colored play
structures.

Maria
* Reader's
Pick - The
Ravine Waterpark,
PASO ROBLES
Michele of Paso Robles thinks this refreshing
park is the perfect way to beat the heat.
From the exciting flume slides to the lazy "kick
back creek," this is the place for keeping
it cool.
2301 Airport
Rd., Paso Robles
Go Wild
There's nothing like a little time immersed
in the untamed natural world to let loose
and enjoy the freedom of the open air.
In addition to playgrounds, these parks
also offer spectacular sights, abundant
wildlife, and hours of unending entertainment.
Nojoqui Falls
County Park,
SOLVANG
Although we do appreciate the picnic area,
playground, and volleyball nets at Nojoqui
(pronounced "NAH-ho-wee") Falls County
Park, the real beauty of this hidden gem
is, of course, the falls! A short 10 - 20
minute hiking trail takes you through a
canopy of trees and leads you to the cascading,
164-foot waterfall. Though the falls are
best viewed after a good rain, the soaring
vista is lovely anytime. The park is easily
accessible from Highway 101 (turn east
onto Old Coast Highway), or you can take
the longer scenic drive from Solvang via
Alisal Road.
Alisal/Santa
Rosa Rd., Solvang
George Washington
Park, PACIFIC
GROVE
Twenty-two wooded acres of forestland speckled
with Monterey pines and towering oaks makes
this natural park a perfect refuge for
important wildlife, especially butterflies.
Known as "Butterfly Town," Pacific Grove
is the destination spot for thousands of
Monarch butterflies migrating from Alaska
and the Canadian Rockies from October through
February. You can sometimes see them in
the trees, but if you head over to the
nearby Monarch Grove Sanctuary, you're
sure to witness the insects fl uttering
about or hanging from the limbs. But keep
a sharp eye; they look like leaves! From
Short St. to Sinex Ave. (between Melrose
St. and Adler St.), Pacific Grove Monarch
Grove Sanctuary: On Ridge Rd. between Lighthouse
Ave. and Short St. We also like Los Alamos
Park, located at the mouth of Drum Canyon.
The 51-acre park is a great starting point
for the area's many biking and hiking trails.
500 Drum Canyon
Rd., Los Alamos
El Chorro
Regional, Park
SAN LUIS OBIPSO
Whether you're looking to play a round
of golf, camp out under the stars, view
brilliant tropical flora, or play with
your pet, you can do it here. The El Chorro
Regional Park offers 62 campsites for tent
or RV camping; an 18-hole golf course (Dairy
Creek); a world class, Mediterranean climate
botanical garden; and two off -leash dog
parks. Plus, you can bike or hike through
the meadows and trails, play volleyball
or horseshoes, or have a barbecue.
Highway 1
at Dairy Creek
Rd.
San Luis Obispo
Lopez Lake
Recreation
Area, ARROYO
GRANDE
The array of activities available makes
this park well worth the $8 per day vehicle-use
fee. From fishing, boating, skiing, and
windsurfing, to picnicking, camping, horseback
riding, hiking, and mountain biking--you'll
never have a dull moment here. Be sure
to check out our favorite spots to take
the kids: the lakefront playground at Mallard
Cove launch area, and the Mustang Waterslides
just around the next curve.
6800 Lopez
Dr., Arroyo
Grande
Hans Christian
Anderson Park,
SOLVANG
Just blocks from bustling downtown Solvang,
this hideaway feels worlds apart while
retaining the fairytale features the city
is known for. Enter through the castle's
gate and escape under the canopy of trees
to experience one of our favorite parks
in the Santa Ynez Valley. Though we love
the children's playground, it is the free
skate park near the entrance that really
got our attention. Complete with ramps,
hubbas, and rails, this outdoor concrete
park has more dips and valleys than most
its size, and offers endless lines and
possibilities.
633 Chalk
Hill Rd., Solvang
We also like:
George C. Beatie Skate Park in Atascadero.
The custom,
all-wood, professionally
built 8,000-sq.
ft. indoor
skate park
consists of
a 4-ft. bowl
with a spine,
multi-tier
staging area
over the stairs,
two mini-ramps,
a pyramid,
and a euro-gap.
5493 Traffic
Way, Atascadero
Alameda Park
SANTA BARBARA
Perhaps a bit
obvious to
Santa Barbara
residents because
it serves as
the hub for
several community
events, we
couldn't possibly
overlook this
8,000-sq. ft.
playground
known as "Kid's
World." The
expansive castle
structures,
which were
built by local
residents,
are great for
exploring and
pretend play.
There are also
giant whale
and shark sculptures
to climb on,
swings, slides,
and great picnic
areas. Although
it can get
a bit crowded,
this playground
is hard to
beat.
1400 Santa
Barbara St.,
Santa Barbara
Shamel Park,
CAMBRIA
This great little playground is located
right next to the largest sandy beach in
Cambria, and the surrounding community
park features a gazebo, public pool, horseshoe
pits, barbecues, and a large grass area
where you can enjoy a lazy afternoon before
heading down to romp around in the sand.
But keep to the shore: because of the dangerous
currents, swimming in the ocean is greatly
discouraged.
5455 Windsor
Blvd., Cambria
Chase Palm
Park, SANTA
BARBARA
With beautiful winding paths that take
you through shady gardens, over bridges
and waterfalls, and around a pond, this
recently renovated park is stunning. At
one end there is an ornate antique carousel
that is open daily, and at the other is
a large shipwreck-themed playground with
an outline of a boat to navigate, a gemfilled
cave to hide in, and sea creatures to climb
on. Across the street, the park has a long
biking and rollerblading trail, expansive
grassy area, and a skateboard park right
on the beach.
E. Cabrillo
Blvd. at Garden
St., Santa
Barbara
Carousel hours:
Mon - Fri,
12 p.m. - 6
p.m., Weekends:
10 a.m. - 7

Spyglass Park
CCM reader Larry of Nipomo likes Spyglass
Park in Shell Beach because, "we can
play and surf at the same spot." This
four-and-a-half acre park has access
to one-and-a-half miles of sandy beach
and tide pools, and includes a playground
and grassy recreation area that is perfect
for picnics or a barbecue.
Spyglass Dr.
and Solano
Rd.. Shell
Beach
Avila Beach
Community Park,
AVILA BEACH
A wooden pirate ship and castle-style climbing
structures inspire imaginative beachfront
play at this new park on the west end of
Avila Beach. Basketball courts and picnic
tables are in close proximity and the new
promenade provides a casual stroll from
the beach to the Avila Pier. Corner of
Front St. and San Juan St. Avila Beach
P Child's Play Chase Palm Park, Santa Barbara
Avila Beach Community Park, Avila Beach

full day of play that is sure to put a

Raising
the Bar:
Best
Brews

Better than
your average
brew: we taste
tested beer from across the Central Coast
in search of the perfect place to enjoy
a cold one. Here are a few local hopspots
that we think offer a little something
extra.
Bulldog British
Pub, MONTEREY
This British-style pub features 16 beers
on tap and carries great brews from England,
Ireland, Belgium, Germany, and the U.S. Plus,
they serve up traditional British food like
savory homemade Shepherd's Pie and big, hearty
burgers with names like Picadilly and Trafalgar.
Whether you're battling in a dart tournament
or just hanging at the Bulldog bar, it's
bottoms-up!
611 Lighthouse Ave., Monterey
(831) 658-0686; www.bulldogbritishpub.com
Artisan, PASO ROBLES
Of course the foodies on-staff love Artisan
for its excellent wine country fare, but
we were delighted to discover the extensive
beer selection at this fine-dining restaurant.
Featuring porters and stouts from around
the world, eight beers on tap, and 30 different
bottles and cans, Artisan isn't just for
the wine loving crowd. Bring a date and enjoy
epicurean cuisine along with your "classy" brew.
We recommend the Firestone Union Jack IPA
and the Paulaner Hefe Weizen made in Germany.
1401 Park St., Paso Robles
(805) 237-8084; www.artisanpasorobles.com
Elsie's Tavern, SANTA BARBARA
If alcohol is the "serum of truth," then
be sure to stop by Elsie's and voice your
honest opinion during one of the open mic
nights or "liberally drinking" political
discussions. Though the vibe in this establishment
feels more like a cross between a coffee
shop and a lounge rather than a bar, the
20 beers on tap make this a pub-crawler's
paradise. Plus, there's pool, Miss Pac-Man,
bowls of fresh popcorn, pop-tarts, a patio,
and free Wi-Fi available. Stop by during
happy hour from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. for 75 cents
off all draft beers, but leave the plastic
at home--this place is cash only.
117 W. De la Guerra St., Santa Barbara
(805) 963-4503
Dunbar Brewing, SANTA MARGARITA
With no street-front entrance, this secret
hideaway is worth the detective work. Recently
returning to the Central Coast brewing scene
after a several years of hiatus, Dunbar Brewing
is now located in a small space behind Ancient
Peak Winery's tasting room and specializes
in Irish style beers. They also offer a wide
range of small-batch artisan beers including
English ale, IPA, Scotch ale, brown porter,
and a stout. CCM tip: If there's a waiting
list at The Range restaurant down the street,
they'll be happy to call you at Dunbar's
when your table is ready.
22720-A El Camino Real, Santa Margarita
(805) 704-9050
Santa Maria Brewing, NIPOMO
The good natured owners at this local watering
hole pour their microbrews as well as they
make them. Friends Dan Hilker and Gary Ford
opened Santa Maria Brewing in 1995, and the
humble home brewers have earned an impressive
reputation with their lineup of specialty
beers, ales, meads, and ciders. We recommend
their refreshing Honey Blond and award-winning
Santa Maria Pale Ale.
112 Cuyama Ln., Nipomo
(805) 349-2090; www.santamariabrew.com
Pozo Saloon, SANTA MARGARITA
Established in 1958, Pozo Saloon is packed
with history and rustic charm, and the beer
is served the old-fashioned way: in a Mason
jar. The saloon's signature drink, the "Pozo
Martini," is always a sure bet--consisting
of beer served in a Mason jar with a few
olives. Choose between the 16 oz. glass,
or, if you're with a crowd, go for the half-gallon
or gallon sizes and stick around for live
music on the huge concert stage outside.
This unique experience is not to be rushed;
so take an afternoon and make the drive back
in time to one of the oldest venues (and
tastiest brews) around.
90 W. Pozo Rd., Santa Margarita
(805) 438-4225; www.pozosaloon.com
Heidelberg Inn, SOLVANG
For a taste of Germany, travel to this authentic
restaurant and beer garden in Solvang. Between
the 33 oz. steins, three diverse beers on
tap (Warseiner Verum, Blue Moon, and Marsteiner
Dunkel), 17 bottled beers, and Germanstyle
sausage, what's not to love? For a refreshing
afternoon, order the Hogaarden--a Belgian
white/wheat beer--and sit in the quaint courtyard
under the umbrellas on the outdoor patio.
And, if you want to make a night of it, the
Inn is perfectly located directly across
the street from the Solvang Theatre.
1618 Copenhagen Dr., Solvang
(805) 688-6213, ext. 1618; www.theheidelberginn.com
Island Brewing, CARPINTERIA
We love a place where board shorts, bare
feet, and good brews can coexist, and Island
Brewing Company in Carpinteria is just that.
Located right off the beach, this is the
perfect spot to cool off and relax with a
few beers after a fun filled day at the beach.
Try our favorites--the Nut Paradise Pale Ale
and the Jubilee Ale--and be sure to check
out the recently added Amber Island Ale.
5049 6 th St., Carpinteria
(805) 745-8272; www.islandbrewingcompany.com
Spike's, SAN LUIS OBISPO
Featuring over 40 different beers (20 of
which are on tap), Spike's stands out as
a Mecca for the serious beer lover. With
various local labels and a list of unique
brews from across the globe, you'll want
to ask for an "Around the World" punch card
to keep track of your travels. Once you get
all 40 beers sampled and your card completely
punched, the next step to initiation is taking
a sip from the "Friendship Mug" before donning
your new t-shirt which identifies you as
a member of the prestigious Around the World
Club. CCM secret tip: It's not on the menu,
but the Avocado Skins are an unbeatable (and
intriguing) appetizer. When available, the
beer battered, deep fried, and black bean
covered skins go perfectly with a cold brew.
570 Higuera St., San Luis Obispo
(805) 544-7157
* Reader's Pick - Anacapa Brewery, Ventura
Ann from Ventura recommends Anacapa Brewery
in downtown Ventura because "It has great

Hotels
on the Beach

The words summer and
beach go together like
wine and cheese for CCMers, and these Central
Coast hotels and resorts offer the quintessential
summer beach vacation experience. Check
them out and check yourself in, but don't
forget to pack your swimsuit--these premier
picks are located squarely on the shoreline.
Harbor View
Inn, SANTA
BARBARA
Situated across from West Beach and Stearn's
Wharf, the Harbor View Inn at the end of
State Street is ideally located for easy
access to the best of Santa Barbara. Even
the standard guest rooms at this charming
Spanish style inn are large and beautifully
designed with private balconies or patios.

Avila Lighthouse Suites, AVILA BEACH
Everything about this area--the beach, the
town, the adjacent park, and this charming
all-suite hotel with its relaxed, beach house
style--is family-friendly, making it one of
our picks for a beach vacation with the kids.
On a sheltered, south-facing bay, this stretch
of coastline enjoys better summer weather
than most Central Coast beaches. Relax in
the outdoor heated pool and spa or challenge
yourself on the family play deck that features
a putting green, life-sized chessboard, and
ping pong tables. But don't forget to take
time for yourself: schedule a relaxing spa
treatment like the 60 minute Sea Side Honey
Scrub, which gently renews the skin with
the aroma-exfoliants, leaving it radiant
and beach-ready.

Sanctuary Beach Resort Monterey Bay, MARINA
Nestled in the sandy dunes of the Monterey
Bay National Marine Sanctuary, this is a
truly unique luxury property that promises
an equally unique stay. The protected stretch
of coastline is highly sheltered, and guests
are even given golf carts to drive to their
rooms upon arrival as a way of keeping cars
out of the secluded area. And although visitors
are limited as to how far they can wander
around the resort, the romantic seclusion
of this highly-prized, private premises is
precisely why we love it.

Best Western
Beach Resort Monterey is a less
expensive alternative for a beach stay on
the Monterey Bay. Only two miles from Monterey's
bustling Fisherman's Wharf, this property
sits alone out on the sands of Seaside Beach,
situated between the ocean and the Monterey
Bay Coastal Bike Path. There's nothing fancy
about this place, but in the evening, wander
out of your room down to the beach to enjoy
spectacular views of the sunset and the city
lights reflecting on the water from across
the bay.

On the Beach
Bed & Breakfast, CAYUCOS
When planning a vacation on the Central Coast,
the goal is not to spend time at the hotel
but rather get out and enjoy everything the
region has to offer. But this luxurious and
delightful beach-house inn, located at the
foot of the pier in the quiet little coastal
town of Cayucos, has a number of enticing
amenities to keep you checking back in. Return
at sunset for some complimentary, award-winning
Central Coast wines, the local Cayucos Brew,
artisan cheeses from around the world, and
a selection of gourmet appetizers. Later,
after heading back from an unforgettable
dinner in town (see p. 69 for our favorite
romantic dining spots), adjourn to the rooftop
deck for a soak under the stars. Then return
to your well appointed room and drift asleep
to the sound of the crashing waves just outside
your window. And On the Beach wouldn't be
regarded as the lavish B&B that it is
without a proper breakfast-- and we promise
you won't be disappointed.

Dream Inn, SANTA CRUZ
If you are looking for a classic California
beach experience for your family, it doesn't
get any better than the Dream Inn. This newly
renovated, luxury boutique hotel is located
directly on the sandy beach, only a few blocks
from the historic Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk
which spans a full mile of spectacular California
coastline. Every room in this retro-chic
hotel has an ocean view, and the beach front
deck has a pool, a kids wading pool, a Jacuzzi,
and a poolside bar so that, if you prefer,
you can take it all in without ever having

Four Seasons Resort the Biltmore, SANTA
BARBARA
Historic and world-class, this Central Coast
treasure is set on 20 acres of meticulously
maintained, lush tropical gardens that overlook
Montecito's Butterfly Beach. Fresh from a
$240 million renovation, the inviting guestrooms
and cottage suites have all the conveniences
that come with a modern upgrade, but remain
authentic in everything from the resplendent
Spanish Colonial architecture to the custom
Spanish tile, ornamental ironwork, and mission-style
furniture. Plus, this is the first summer
you'll be able to enjoy the newly reopened
Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club--an exclusive

Blue Dolphin Inn, CAMBRIA
This charming inn, located on the beautiful
windswept Moonstone Beach, is one of our
favorite spots to take in the northern San
Luis Obispo County coastline. Named for the
dolphins that frolic in the local waters,
the inn features six unique oceanfront specialty
rooms based on locations around the world
where dolphins abound. Sip coffee and enjoy
breakfast on your private patio as you get
lost in the breathtaking ocean views. Or,
take a closer look: walk along the trail
that follows the shoreline and explore tidepools,
or stop at one of the spectacular vistas--perfect
for spotting whales or other marine mammals
as they swim by. Before you leave, descend
the stairs to the sandy beach and collect
the smooth, translucent, milky-white moonstone
agates that give this beach its name.

SeaVenture Resort, PISMO BEACH
Jen from Arroyo Grande always recommends
the SeaVenture Resort to her out-of-town
guests because, unlike many of the other
hotels in the area, this one sits directly
on the beach. And "after a long day of surfing,
there is a great hot tub on your private
oceanfront balcony, and a quiet rooftop terrace
for cocktails and small plates at sunset."

On
a Roll:
Sushi

There are plenty of outstanding sushi spots
on the Central Coast, and we know where
they are. From skilled execution and creative
presentations to fresh ingredients and flavorful
combinations, these are our picks for great
places to experience this ancient edible
art form.
Akaoni, CARMEL
BY THE SEA
You'll need to make reservations at this
small, café-style Japanese restaurant
tucked away just off Ocean Avenue in Carmel.
The easily-missed, unassuming sushi spot
fills up quickly (since there are only about
eight tables), and we understand why. If
you judge your sushi by its freshness and
authenticity, this is the place for you.
We love the diver scallops, Spanish mackerel,
and uni. While they offer a few rolls, save
ordering these for other places that can't
match this perfectly traditional Japanese
fare.
Mission & 6 th Ave., Carmel by the Sea
(831) 620-1516
Sakana Sushi, SANTA BARBARA
Custom-made sauces, exquisite presentation,
and innovative dishes are what make Sakana
one of our favorite Santa Barbara sushi spots.
Although some traditionalists may complain
that sauced-up sushi is "unauthentic," there's
something to be said for these creative flavor
fusions. The extensive menu can be a bit
daunting at first, but take the time to read
through all of the interesting combinations
and order something truly original. Our favorites
are the Habañero Yellowtail Press
Box, Merry-Go-Round roll, Aburri Toro sushi,
and the baked scallops. Word of warning:
don't come on an empty stomach, this popular
hot-spot is always busy.
1046 Coast Village Rd., Ste. K, Santa Barbara
(805) 565-2014
Atari-ya, SANTA MARIA
We first heard about Atari-ya from a trusted
foodie friend who warned us not to let the
strip mall location inhibit us from entering
this homey sushi joint. We drop in when we're
super hungry, since the rolls here are so
big. There is a great selection of sushi
and sashimi for those who prefer the real
deal, but admittedly, our default order is
always the Spicy Hamachi Roll and the Rainbow
Roll (huge portions of fish!). Come during
happy hour from 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. for great
sushi specials, and be sure to sit at the
bar--you're likely to get a few complimentary
samples from the oh-so-generous chef, Yuki.

Santa Maria

A-Ru , BUELLTON
In an area that is widely known for its country
cookin', A-Ru has proven to be a welcome
addition to the Santa Ynez Valley. The interesting
and intriguing items on the menu were created
especially for those who are still developing
an affinity for authentic sushi. The potato
wrapped shrimp tempura (served with her homemade
salsa), and the rock shrimp popcorn appetizer
are two that are definitely worth a try.
And if you're hungry for a roll, nothing
beats the Ru Roll with tempura, asparagus,
lobster, and cucumber. For those who prefer
the more traditional route, the nigiri sushi
assortment is always delicious and always
fresh.
225 McMurray Rd., Buellton
(805) 686-9001
Sushi Hanada, VENTURA
Sushi snobs have met their match. This "Tokyo-style" sushi
restaurant in the harbor is slightly intimidating
upon first visit (a sign on the table warns
guests not to order wasabi on the side).
Sushi here is strict, simple, and no-frills,
but it's impeccably fresh (Hanada-san goes
to the LA market everyday) and well prepared.
CCM foodies appreciate the chef's straight
forward approach--there are no fancy or fusion-style
rolls and all of the dishes have minimal
garnish--so the true taste of the seafood
comes through. Try the Sweet Shrimp Sushi
made with Santa Barbara Spotted Shrimp, or
put your dining fate in the capable hands
of the master and order "omakase style"--meaning
Hanada-san can prepare for you whatever he
wishes.
457 W. Channel Islands Blvd., Port Hueneme
(805) 984-7978
Izakaya Raku, GROVER BEACH
We love this "Japanese Tapas Bar" for its
perfectly sized sharable plates, impressive
drink menu, imaginative cuisine, and incredibly
reasonable prices. The family-run restaurant
is fairly new to the area (owners Tony and
Chie Yoshida opened the establishment in
2008 after moving to the Central Coast from
Los Angeles), and we've been hooked since
day one. Our favorite appetizers are the
Nasumiso (deep fried eggplant with a sweet
miso sauce) and the Shishito (grilled Japanese
peppers). As an entrée, the specialty
Doug Roll is a light, clean dish that includes
a spicy tuna roll (minus the mayo) wrapped
in soy paper and topped with albacore and
jalapeño. The Grover Sunset Roll is
another mouthwatering favorite with shrimp
tempura and spicy tuna on top. But be sure
to check out the chalkboard when you first
walk in for specials that aren't listed on
the menu. Our only question: do we really
have to share?
953 W. Grand Ave., Grover Beach
(805) 474-9962; www.izakayaraku.com
Goshi, PASO ROBLES SAN LUIS OBISPO
This Japanese restaurant is a favorite among
staffers who appreciate authentic, traditional
sushi dishes. Always fresh and consistently
good, we've never had a bad experience at
either of Goshi's locations. There are plenty
of uncommon and unusual items available (like
jellyfish, baby octopus, and flying fish),
and the chefs can make pretty much anything
you could imagine. We love the Albacore Tataki
as well as the asparagus portabella tempura
(okay, so it's not sushi, but it's delicious!).
CCM side note: Tsurugi in San Luis Obispo
has recently changed its name to Goshi (both
are owned by the same chef). The menu has
changed, but you can always ask for your
regular order and the chefs will gladly make
it.

570 Higuera St., Ste. 20, San Luis Obispo

Harada Japanese
Restaurant & Sushi Bar,
MORRO BAY
The ocean side location at this sushi spot
makes for not only beautiful bay views, but
also incredibly fresh fish. Caught from local
waters (Harada gets its seafood from Giovanni's
Fish Market on the Embarcadero), this waterfront
restaurant is a sure bet when it comes to
exceptional freshness and consistently outstanding
taste. Our perfect pairing is the sushi combination,
which includes a California roll and 12 different
kinds of sushi.
630 Embarcadero, Morro Bay
(805) 772-1410
Arigato Sushi, SANTA BARBARA
If you're looking for a great date-night
restaurant, the trendy Arigato Sushi on Santa
Barbara's hopping State Street won't disappoint.
Romantic ambiance, elegant décor,
and artfully prepared dishes make this the
crème de la crème in Japanese
fine dining. Have your pick of creative,
fusion-style rolls, or try one of our favorites:
the Blue Man Roll (tuna, crab, asparagus,
mango, avocado, cilantro, and jalapeño
masago and mango relish) is unlike anything
we've ever tasted (and utterly addicting),
and the Dracula Roll (with tuna, blackened
ahi, albacore, Belgian endive, red onion,
and red chile sauce) has a slightly spicy
kick that's irresistible. And if you're in
the mood for fish, the yellowtail or Miso-Glazed
Black Cod will melt in your mouth.
1225 State St., Santa Barbara
(805) 965-6074
Yanagi
Greg from San Luis Obispo likes Yanagi in
Pismo Beach because, "the views are incredible,
the sushi is always good, and you can sit
at the teppanyaki tables and watch the chefs
prepare the food right in front of you."

Revisit History:
Iconic Landmarks

A journey through the Central Coast isn't
complete without taking a few detours down

to halls where they were entertained, we

Pick - Dana
Adobe, NIPOMO
Tyler from Nipomo recommends this historically
significant residence for an up close look
at life in the middle of the 19 th century:
Casa de Dana, home of Captain William G.
Dana, which he began building in 1831 after
receiving a 38,000-acre land grant. For many
years this was a welcoming place where weary
travelers found food and lodging, and was
an exchange point for couriers of the newly
formed California mail route. Currently undergoing
an extensive renovation to restore and preserve
the dwelling and surrounding grounds, the
adobe is open to the public on Sundays from

Tor House and Hawk Tower, CARMEL
Standing tall along the rocky shore of the
Monterey Peninsula is the small estate of
California poet Robinson Jeffers. Serving
as a sanctuary and refuge for the prolific
poet, it is here with his family that he
scripted his literary legacy in peaceful
isolation. Hawk Tower, which sits adjacent
the cottage, was built with Jefferson's own
hands using stones taken from the Carmel
coastline. Docent-led tours of Hawk Tower
and the Tor House--with its portraits, books,
unusual art objects, and the old-world gardens--are
conducted hourly every Friday and Saturday.
Reservations are recommended, and for safety
reasons, children under 12 years of age are
not permitted.

Little Red Schoolhouse, BALLARD
Though it looks like it was constructed for
a Hollywood movie set, Ballard's Little Red
Schoolhouse was built in 1882 at a time when
it was thought that this unincorporated town,
now with a population of less than 1,000,
would become a metropolis. Still in operation
today, the schoolhouse is part of The Ballard
School, serving a kindergarten through sixth
grade student body of about 150 students.
Though not open to the public, the exterior
of the building is accessible for viewing
and photography.
2425 School St., Ballard
Mission San Antonio de Padua, FORT HUNTER
LIGGET
The third mission to be built along El Camino
Real, Mission San Antonio de Padua was founded
in 1771, and is referred to as the "mission
that time forgot." Its remote location, on
property once owned by William Randolph Hearst
and now home to Fort Hunter Ligget, has kept
it far from the encroaching populace, and
as a result, the setting looks almost the
same today as it did when Father Junípero
Serra first hung a mission bell on an oak
tree to call forth "all the gentiles." Visitors
can wander about the grounds at their own
pace and view the museum's extensive collection
that reflects mission life. Since this is
Federal land, access requires a valid driver's
license, vehicle registration, and proof
of insurance.
Open daily 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m., June through
September. www.missionsanantonio.net
Point Pinos Lighthouse, PACIFIC GROVE
The oldest continuously operating lighthouse
on the West Coast, Point Pinos began warning
ships they were nearing the craggy coast
in 1885 by use of a whale oil lantern. Today
it serves the same purpose with a 1000-watt
bulb. And while the energy source may have
changed over the years, the building, lenses,
and prisms in this Pacific Grove lighthouse
are all original. Located at the very end
of the aptly named Lighthouse Avenue, Point
Pinos houses a museum run by the Pacific
Grove Museum of National History and is open
from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Thursday through Monday.
A $2 donation is recommended for adults,
$1 for children.

Lobero Theatre, SANTA BARBARA
In 1873 Jose Lobero opened the only opera
house south of San Francisco. It seated 1,300
people and, at the time, was the largest
adobe building in the state. After falling
into disrepair, it was rebuilt and reopened
in 1924; to this day, it has remained the
center of Santa Barbara performing arts and
is the oldest continuously operating theatre
in California. A state historical landmark
(No. 361), it is one of those rare pieces
of history that you can actually experience
rather than just look at. Th e wide variety
of programming ranges from dance performances
to classical music concerts, and it even
serves as a venue for the Santa Barbara International
Film Festival.

www.lobero.com
Carnegie Libraries Known as the "patron saint
of libraries," steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie
funded the construction of more than 2,500
book repositories around the world, including
eight on the Central Coast. Of these, six
are still standing and in use today--though
only two still operate as a library. With
architectural styles ranging from mission
to Romanesque, most were designed by William
H. Weeks, California's most prolific Carnegie
architect. Committed to bettering society
through education, Andrew Carnegie required
each community that received a building grant
to formally agree to continuously support
the library through local tax funds, ensuring
that books would be available to all citizens.

Out on the Town:
Nightlife

Not ready for the night to end? We feel exactly the same, so CCM headed downtown to seek out local clubs that serve up more than just a fancy cocktail. When you aren't ready to call it quits, these picks offer the whole shebang-- drinks, dancing, music, pool, and more.
Candlelight,
VENTURA
For a unique after-hours experience, follow
the twinkling lights to the huge, beautifully
restored Victorian lounge located centrally
in downtown Ventura. We recommend getting
there early for a romantic dinner for two
before joining up with friends in one of
their private bungalows illuminated with
crystal chandeliers. Rows of votive candles
set the tone and the overstuff ed pillows
create an exclusive, intimate atmosphere.
We tried the uniquely named "Egyptian Silk" martini
containing Skyy Vodka, Velvet Falernum, lime,
and orange all mixed and dusted with nutmeg,
which proved refreshing and flavorful. Throughout
the week you can experience Monday night
acoustic concert series; Wednesday Reggae
nights; and Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
disc jockeys spinning the hottest house,
pop, hip-hop and rock.

and Saturday evenings for jammin' DJs and
late night dancing. Get inspired by ordering "The

name, Hush is the perfect spot to get loose

Cibo, MONTEREY
We love the vibrant atmosphere of Cibo Ristorante
Italiano with live jazz music spilling out

tap your feet with entertainment and libations
lasting until 2 a.m. CCMers suggest arriving
a little early to take in the new world Italian
cuisine that is as eclectic as the music,
washed down by one of the specialty martinis

Known for its expansive tequila bar, El Rey's
is an Elvis inspired hot-spot with 26 "Silver
Tequilas" and 10 "Expensive Sipping Tequilas" ranging
from $7 to $70, giving everyone a shot at
something tasty mid-boogie. Dishing up authentic
Mexican cuisine, El Rey's serves food until

you can shake your hips to.

1914, this tiny general store serves up some
of CCM's favorite sandwiches. While the Beef

is the Homemade Meatloaf Sandwich with Hearst

and it is also what we love about their Housemade
Roast Beef sandwich with bleu cheese, grilled
onions, and sundried tomatoes. Or, try the
Ham and Brie with caramelized onions, roasted
peppers, and sundried tomatoes on a crusty
Italian roll.

Hush Harbor Artisan Bakery, ATASCADERO
Baking some of the best breads in town, you
better believe Hush harbor also makes some
of the best tasting sandwiches. And though
you're certainly entitled to your choice
of bread, we can tell you that you'll want
to order the Tuna Melt with pesto, Caesar
sauce, and melted provolone on the multigrain
wheat bread. And when you put a French Dip
with horseradish sauce and au jus on their
light, chewy baguette, it is elevated beyond
what you'd normally expect from this traditional
selection.

Sissy's Uptown

On thick slabs of light crispy sourdough,
we can't keep away from Sissy's grilled sandwiches.
And we can see why "Our Most Popular" sandwich
is named as such, with the grilled/smoked
turkey, bacon, Cotswold cheese, and aioli.
Served with a house salad or homemade soup,
it's a satisfying meal at only $9.50. And
their Vegetarian Sandwich for $9.25 is equally
popular with CCMers because of the generous
Shiitake, button, and oyster mushrooms, grilled
red bell pepper, and Fontina cheese. 112

Frankie & Lola's,
MORRO BAY
We love this newcomer to the historic
fishing village of Morro Bay for its small
menu that's big on creativity, and because
everything (and we mean everything!) is made
from scratch. The bold flavors of the Tri
Tip Avocado sandwich are unforgettable, with
melty jack cheese, North African harrisa,
and crispy romaine, served with house-cut
fries for $11.20. Or try the house smoked

Pierre Lafond Montecito Deli, MONTECITO
We relish the specialty sandwiches and panini
at this little Montecito deli, and we favor
the flavor of their creative condiments.
Their Muff aletta, with Genoa salami, Black
Forrest ham, provolone, and Cajun spices,
is spectacular with its green-olive garlic
and tomato relish on grilled focaccia. And
The Summerland, with organic turkey and Brie
on grilled sourdough, is brightened with

Muzio's , SAN LUIS OBISPO
When grabbing a quick lunch on-the-go, we
trust Muzio's to provide a great selection
of premade sandwiches. But we usually prefer
to wait our turn, perusing the tempting little
gourmet market while they assemble the creation
of our choice. Most popular among our staff
are the Roasted Red Pepper and Eggplant with
Chèvre on a baguette for $10.95, or
the Pepper Special with melted pepper jack
on pepper turkey with pepperoncinis and tomato
on a baguette for $8.95.

Alphy's Broiler, ARROYO GRANDE
Quite frankly, we think it's pretty hard
to make a bad turkey club, so we wouldn't
bother recommending one unless it was exceptional.
With turkey breast piled high on their garlic
oregano focaccia along with double smoked
bacon, lettuce, and tomato, this Club (at
just $7.95) exceeds expectations. And this
is true of everything here--from the refreshingly
friendly service right down to the generous
serving of the best coleslaw we've ever had!

Though we frequent the charming and rustic

chicken sandwiches. We couldn't decide whether
to recommend the Roast Chicken with pesto,
pine nuts, feta, and sun-dried tomatoes for
$8.50, or the Panino Cobb Sandwich with roasted

15 Degrees C
Heather from Atascadero nominated 15 Degrees

Golf Courses

California's Central Coast has long been known as a golfing destination, sporting such famous names as "Pebble" and "Spyglass," but amidst these giants are hidden emerald gems-- affordable, accessible, and richly deserving of our attention.
Pacific Grove
Golf Links
Located just minutes from downtown Monterey,
Pacific Grove Golf Links offers an incredibly
scenic round of golf for under $50. The front
nine's tree lined fairways wander through
sleepy residential Pacific Grove to emerge
upon the coast where the back nine wraps "links
style" around the Point Pinos Lighthouse.
Designed by Jack Neville, original designer
of Pebble Beach Golf Links, the back nine
affords great ocean side golf with spectacular
views of the Pacific Ocean, Lovers Point,
and the Asilomar sand dunes.
www.ci.pg.ca.us/golf
Hunter Ranch Golf Course, PASO ROBLES
Two hours south of Monterey via Highway 101,
lush fairways sprawl across the Paso Robles
wine country. Every bit as challenging as
her well publicized sister course, La Purisma,
Hunter Ranch presents the golfer with a wide
variety of risk vs. reward shot choices framed
by native grasses, mature oak trees, rolling
hills, and expansive vineyards. Although
reasonably priced and public, this manicured
course, combined with a well stocked pro
shop, comfortable restaurant, and quality
practice facilities leaves the pampered golfer
feeling like a member of an exclusive private
club. www.hunterranchgolf.com
Morro Bay Golf
Course
On coastal Highway
One, situated within the 2,700 acres of Morro
Bay State Park, this course takes full advantage
of its hilly terrain to present the golfer
with stunning views of the surrounding park,
estuary, dunes, and bay. Built in 1923 near
the ever present Morro Rock, this mature
track tests the golfer's skill with sloping
fairways and greens that seem to defy the
laws of nature. This "not to miss" golf course
deserves its popularity, and reservations
are recommended. 19 th Hole opportunities
abound in the nearby area and the quaint
town of Morro Bay.
www.slocountyparks.com
The Challenge at Monarch Dunes, NIPOMO
Located on the Nipomo Mesa, 45 miles south
of Morro Bay, The Challenge at Monarch Dunes
showcases a refreshing concept in golf course
design. A foursome can easily complete this
gorgeous 12-hole course in under two hours.
Although a par three, The Challenge is definitely
not a "pitch 'n' putt" course, and most assuredly
merits her name. Diverse tee boxes vary the
course length from 1,125 yards to 1,832 yards,
while large multi-tiered greens on each hole
entice the golfer with a seemingly endless
variety of shot options. Add to this numerous
water hazards, strategically placed bunkers,
deep rough, elevated tees, and fast greens,
and the result is a "high speed turbulent" golf
experience. Green fees are inexpensive (under
$20 walking), and the fun is abundant. www.monarchdunes.com
Marshallia Ranch Golf Course, VANDENBERG
AFB
Ten miles northwest of Lompoc, Marshallia
Ranch threads her fairways across the 98,000
coastal acres of remote Vandenberg Air Force
Base. This exceptional military golf course
is open to the public and provides an opportunity
to enjoy the natural beauty surrounding Vandenberg's
stately launch towers and tracking dishes.
Although there are no water hazards, the
course is amply protected by tightly bunkered
greens, narrow tree lined fairways, deep
barrancas, and large expanses of ice plant.
Deer frequently wander the fairways, birds
soar overhead, and a wide array of teeming
wildlife and native plants add to the wonderful "get
away" feeling afforded by this isolated area. www.30svs.com/fscg.html
Sandpiper Golf Club, SANTA BARBARA
Adjacent to the luxurious Bacara Resort and
Spa, perched on the bluff s overlooking the
Channel Islands, sits Sandpiper Golf Club,
an ocean side public course that has played
host to many professional golf contests.
The entire course is spectacular, but several
of the par three holes deserve special mention.
The par three 6 th plays 210 yards along
the bluff, reminiscent of Torrey Pines, giving
the golfer a hint of the great ocean side
golf to come on the back nine. Number 11
offers a "nose bleed" elevated tee shot from
the high bluff to a green on the beach below.
Concluding the picturesque back, the beautiful
par three 18 th returns to the clubhouse
across water to a sloping green tucked tightly
between the pond and hillside.
www.sandpipergolf.com
Tierra Rejada Golf Club, MOORPARK
Meandering through the foothills and canyons
of eastern Ventura County, Tierra Rejada
presents 18 unique holes of diverse elevation
and stellar views. Something inspired has
taken place, for here at last is a track
where every hole is truly different. Each
succeeding tee box brings a new look, a new
challenge, and a fresh perspective on the
designer's intent, which is clearly to have
fun, as this course is an absolute delight
to play. After the round, you may want to
relax in the comfortable clubhouse setting
of T.J.'s Grill enjoying great food and full
bar service, or take the opportunity to visit
the close-by Ronald Reagan Presidential Library
and Museum.

THE CLUBFITTERS
We turned to our favorite golf contributor
for these picks. Julie McGrew is an avid
golfer and custom clubmaker who, with her
husband Randy, operates The Clubfitters--a
CGA certified club fitting and assembly shop
in Nipomo. Both hold advanced accreditation
by the Golf Clubmakers Association and their
shop is equipped with the latest precision
technology to support their passion of building
the finest golf clubs possible. To that end
they use components designed by Tom Wishon,
an industry leader whose clubs have won tournaments
at the Ryder Cup, the Champions Tour, and
the PGA tour. Prior to assembling clubs,
The Clubfitters perform a comprehensive interview
and analysis of the player's swing, and review
all aspects of their game and existing equipment.
Care is taken to discuss the golfer's needs
and goals, as well as their preferences in
club head design, shaft options, and grip
style. Julie says, "The process of club fitting
is very gratifying. We are able to provide
a matched set of clubs perfectly suited to
the client, thus improving their ability
to both play and enjoy the game of golf." Contact

Happy Hour Hot Spots

A mysterious thing happens to members of the CCM staff between the hours 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.--we become uncontrollably, uninhibitedly happy! In a beautiful old Victorian house, under

dining fireside surrounded by artwork and
antiques, lovers are transported to one of
the most romantic spots on the planet: the
countryside of France. Stella Mare's décor
is authentic and appealing, serving as the
perfect backdrop for the traditional Country
French Cuisine. After lingering over your

The Range, SANTA MARGARITA
In its bucolic setting, this tiny dinner
house evokes our nostalgia for small town
country life. The intimate dining room has
a charming cowboy theme--which could have
been overdone but isn't--but the best choice
might be the patio on a warm Santa Margarita
evening. Country music flows from the speakers,
but if you're lucky, you might catch the
serenade of the owners' daughter, local rising
star and singer/songwriter Jade Jackson.
But don't expect small town fare--though true
to the area's rural roots, the steakhouse
menu boasts sophisticated California flavors.
You also shouldn't expect modern conveniences
like taking reservations or credit cards.

Cass House, CAYUCOS
Located within a meticulously restored coastal

definitions of romance is a feeling of adventure,
and the truly innovative cuisine at the Cass
House certainly enhances that aspect of your
evening, making your night truly memorable.

Bistro Moulin, MONTEREY
The romantic notion of being instantly transported
to a tiny bistro in France is the inspiration
behind this quaint spot, coveted by locals
as a refuge from the bustling tourist activity
just outside its doors. In the European tradition,
the tables are set very close together, creating
an atmosphere that is warm and friendly,
yet the casual space also appeals to those
seeking a cozy and intimate dining experience.
And with a selection of French wines and
the native cuisine of this French-born chef,
the illusion is flawless, and the experience
memorable.

is that you can come back again and again,

establishing a connection with this fishing
village's rich past. So whether you'd prefer

intimacy of a candlelit 19 th century drawing

Treasure Beach
and Café, OJAI
When we've worked up a healthy appetite for
a tasteful selection of casual daywear, we
always stop by this adorable clothing store
and restaurant on the east end of Ojai Avenue.
The assortment of comfy lounge wear and slinky
apparel is a fashionable feast for the eyes,
and is almost as appetizing as the delicious
gourmet fare served in the shop's organic
café (located behind the retail area).
But the sales are the real treat--enticing
us with sweet deals between 30 - 40 percent
off .

Bloke, SAN LUIS OBISPO
Okay, okay, we admit it: the CCM staff is
a primarily feminine force. So where do the
men of the magazine shop when they're looking
for upscale clothing in downtown San Luis
Obispo? They head to Bloke--the newest, hippest
clothing store for the modern male. Guys
can choose between a variety of designer
labels like French Connection, Converse Varvatos,
Penguin, Lacoste, and Monarchy, and select
from a range of stylistic preferences, including
contemporary, surf-inspired, and even business/professional.
But if you're a little unsure of what to
wear (or what not to wear), the store's always
approachable owner, Alissa Disalvo, gladly
lends customers her expert eye and unbiased
opinion.

Bike Riding Bliss,
EDNA VALLEY, ARROYO GRANDE
One of the most unique ways to take in the
Central Coast's distinct wine growing regions
is by bike. At a leisurely pace along meandering
country roads, riders are immersed in the
sights, sounds, and smells of the vineyards
that produce our quality grapes while stopping
along the way to taste the results firsthand.
Biddle Ranch Road features two of our favorite
stops: charming Saucelito Canyon with its
full bodied Zinfandel, and Edna Valley Vineyard
with its gorgeous views and refreshing Pinot
Gris. If you want a group experience, Central
Coast Outdoors provides an excellent service
for bikers of all skill levels and even offers
a gourmet picnic lunch and rental bikes.
If you are more interested in tasting than
riding, they offer AM rides followed by a
van tour of wineries in the afternoon.

Kamikaze Kayaking, SHELL BEACH
There is something especially daring about
kayaking in the open ocean waters. When we
decide to hit the Pacific, Central Coast
Kayaks is where we outfit our voyage. For
a specialized tour, try their Cave Expedition
package, which weaves through arches and
caves, maneuvering through the rock gardens
around dinosaur cove--which is only accessible
by kayak. For the seasoned rider, this summer
Central Coast Kayaks offers a strenuous and
exhilarating Pirates' Excursion tour starting
at Avila Beach and navigating through sea
carved rock grottos where 16 th century pirates
and explorers ventured. If you're lucky,
ocean wildlife--including otters, seals, and
dolphins--will swim alongside the kayak as
you paddle through their home. Only swimsuits,
sunscreen, and a smile are required, and
all paddling equipment, water, and even snacks
are included.

Another great
cave expedition: Take a ferry
from Ventura Harbor to the Channel Islands
where a knowledgeable guide from Paddle Sports
of Santa Barbara will lead you through kelp
forests and jagged island archways.

Rowdy Off-Roading, OCEANO DUNES
A Central Coast "must" that attracts visitors
from all around the state, "the dunes" in
Oceano are the perfect spot to get out of
your comfort zone and zoom over miles of
white sandy hills. The 1,500 acre stretch
is specifically designed for ATVs, and is
a Central Coast exclusive. We like the pricing
of B.J.'s ATV Rentals (starting at $30 for
the first hour of rental), but since it's
such a blast, sign up for at least two.

Way-Out Windsurfing,
LOPEZ LAKE RECREATIONAL AREA, ARROYO GRANDE
Warm summer waters, 22 miles of shoreline,
and plenty of wind make Lopez Lake stand
out as the premier spot to windsurf. Located
just a short (and beautiful) 10 mile drive
east of Arroyo Grande, this is a special
place to catch some air atop crystal waters
where waves work like launching pads that
send you soaring mid-air before landing (gracefully
of course) back onto the lake's surface.

Hard Hiking, BIG SUR
The drive to Big Sur is known for its winding
roads and stunning landscapes, all viewable
from your car window, but we recommend pulling
over at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and
experiencing the terrain firsthand. When
you arrive at the park, follow the McWay
Waterfall Overlook Trail and fork to the
right alongside the cliff s until you reach
the observation deck, a short walk away.
There you will be treated to the breathtaking
sight of McWay Falls--a rushing, 80-foot waterfall
that will leave you inspired by its majestic
beauty. The pristine beach is not accessible
to hikers, but just seeing the coastline's
serene seclusion leaves you feeling like
you're a part of something special. And if
you've got the time and determination, double
back the way you came until you reach the
sign for Ewoldsen Trail that starts along
McWay Creek. Plan on dedicating about two-and-a-half
hours to powering up this four-and-a-half
mile loop. Even the toughest athlete will
work up a sweat, so don't forget to stop
and catch your breath, re-hydrate, and refuel
at the various lookout points while you take
in the awe-inspiring scenery of Big Sur.
With waterfalls, groves of Redwood trees,
and streams to amuse and entertain, you won't
even realize that you've climbed up 1,600
feet of terrain. Moss covered boulders mark
the way as you trek skyward, zigzagging up
switchbacks en route to the top of the world.
Before long, the trail opens up to a colorful
view line extending along the coast from
north to south, making the reward more than
worth the effort.

Other Big Sur Trails we like: Vicente Flat,
Hare Creek, Cone Peak, and Salmon Creek
Sensational Surfing, CAYUCOS
With such amazing coastline between Ventura
and Monterey, it's hard to know where to
dive in. Cayucos is a quiet beach town with
big waves that create the perfect thrill
we crave. If you have your own board, just
hit the water running; but for those who
need some extra guidance, rent one from Cayucos
Surf Company and take advantage of a two
hour lesson for only $70 that will leave
you feeling empowered as you paddle out into
the rising surf. Hang loose!

*Reader's Pick - Surfer's Point at Seaside
Park, Ventura
Wendy from Ventura notes, "It's such a fun
place to walk along the seaside and sightsee.
There are always so many people around and
lots of kids playing or riding their bikes
as well as tons of surfers and windsurfers."
Radical Ropes Course, OJAI
No matter your age or ability, we know you'll
love the physically and mentally challenging
ropes course offered by the Ojai Foundation.
A great way to grow emotionally closer with
teammates, friends, family, or co-workers
is to throw yourself into a position where
you literally lean on each other as you tackle
each obstacle along the course. A hands-on
experience like never before, you'll learn
to take a leap of faith. (805) 646-8343; www.ojaifoundation.org
Soar the Skies, LOMPOC
Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc provides
the setting for the experience of a lifetime.
After a safety video and some practice jumps
on the ground, prepare to board an airplane
that takes you up, up, and above the clouds.
Then, securely attached to an expert tandem
partner, you take the plunge and freefall
into the expanse of blue sky. A sensational
rush of air hits you in the face as you soar
with the birds before your parachute expands
allowing you to glide safely to the soft,
sandy patch waiting to catch you. After your
successful jump, display your certificate
proudly because you have just earned yourself
some serious bragging rights. While pricey,
you won't regret buying the memento DVD to
relive the thrill again and again.

Righteous Rock Climbing, PINNACLES NATIONAL
MONUMENT
Escape to the mountains and then climb them!
Pinnacles National Monument is a breathtaking
getaway right here on the Central Coast.
Tucked in the mountains east of King City,
Pinnacles is a magical spot for a day trip
or you can set up camp at the privately owned
campground just outside the park's east entrance.
The monument offers well-bolted anchors for
you to test your strength and challenge your
endurance, and it is open to all ages. With
its wildlife, blue skies, and magnificent
rock formations, Pinnacles is a local treasure.

Castoro
Cellars,
Paso Robles
The French-Canadian born siblings Sarah
and Christian Dugas have been making music
together since the Dugas Family Band toured
Canada when Chris was nine and Sara was
just seven. Their musical blend of traditional
bluegrass, folk-rock, soul, and jazz is
steeped in a musical tradition that's not
just in their nature, it's in their DNA.

Unfinished Business,Vina Robles Winery, Paso
Robles
The music of The Beatles is like a fine Vina
Robles Wine--it just gets better with age.
Alas, the Fab Four are no more, but for lovers
of the loveable Liverpool lads, this festival
of everything Beatles will feature local
band Unfinished Business doing a musical
tribute, a British car show and even screenings
of classic films like a Hard Days Night and
Help! Not sure if "Fish and Finger Pie" or "Glass
Onions" will be on the menu.
September 12
Bonnie Raitt
and Taj Mahal, Santa Barbara Bowl
A Bonnie
Raitt concert on its own is always a powerful
musical experience, but sharing the stage
with the legendary Taj Mahal is not only
a stroke of genius, but it has the potential
to be such a potent night of pure soul and
power that the seats at the Bowl will have
to be grounded to prevent audience electrocution.
October 10
Roger McGuinn, Performing Arts Center, San
Luis Obispo
Most of us remember the stoic
Byrds front man with his Beatles bowl cut,
groovy rectangle shades, and his jingle-jangle
12-string, but Roger McGuinn shunned the
rock n' roll star lifestyle and settled down
to create a wonderful body of work, while
perfecting his craft. He is living proof
of the ecclesiastical fact that there is
a time for every purpose under heaven.
