CCM California's Central Coast Magazine

Living in a paradise defined by coastline, surf, and sand, we could literally have written a book on favorite Central Coast beaches for different interests—secret sandy coves, killer point breaks, fertile fishing grounds, and remote sand dunes. Each unique spot has its own strengths and treasures. But our favorite beaches offer something for everyone—where kids can build sand castles while dad surfs, mom collects sea shells, and the family dog romps in the shallow waters. These are our favorite spots for a day—or a lifetime—of fun in the sun.

    Jalama Beach

WindsurfingNext time you take a drive on the scenic Highway 1 near Lompoc, don’t pass by the little Jalama Beach Road turnoff—it’ll take you 14 miles and worlds away to a spectacular Central Coast of yore where wildflowers erupt across the hillsides and wide open spaces stretch out of sight. The winding, oak shaded road ends with a sprawling view of the undeveloped coastline south of Vandenberg—aquamarine waters cascading over a sandy beach offering long walks for you and your dog, surf fishing, surfing, and some truly mighty gusts of wind for kite and windsurfers. As a campsite and day-use area with a store, restaurant, bathrooms, and playground, this park is an ideal destination for beach lovers of all types and a cherished treasure of the Central Coast.

Sycamore Canyon lies on the other side of the highway and offers campsites and mountain trails for hiking and biking—“A great spot for full moon hikes!” Stacey says.
